Project to pave 126-km stretch of Trans Labrador Highway gets $64.5M in provincial, federal funds

Financing RoadsHAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L.—The years-long project to pave the entirety of Labrador’s sole highway is one step closer to reaching fruition.
The federal and provincial governments have committed $64.5 million to widen and pave a 126-kilometre stretch of the Trans Labrador Highway from east of Happy Valley-Goose Bay on the Churchill River to Cartwright Junction.
The remote highway is one of the few public routes in Labrador, connecting a number of small communities across approximately 1,200 km. Various parts of the highway have been upgraded from gravel to asphalt over the past several years.
Along with making communities across Labrador more accessible, the province says the construction work will create jobs and facilitate trade.
Ottawa will invest $31.8 million in the project, while Newfoundland and Labrador will pick up the remaining tab.
